I don't get made fun of

Two weekends ago I came to the realization that my friends don't make fun of me (to my face). But I make fun of them a lot! Like Jon and Brandon and Stephen, they all get my fair share of verbal abuse. Of course people call me a bully, but that is more a statement of fact and not really a hurtful remark.

If you have been around me for the past couple of weeks I have probably mentioned the mashup of Radiohead and Jay-Z. Please download the album, it is something you need to hear. It is stuff like this that makes our generation of music amazing. I know that people have always sampled. But there is some artistry involved with syncing the songs together. It defiantly requires a solid ear.

I watched the show with my brother, and we had a good chuckle about Ms. Hudson's first dress.

I am not making fun of her size. She had a beautiful dress for when she preformed.

Radiohead preformed "15 Steps" from In Rainbows. With a drum line that looked like they were from a local high school and Thom Yorke encouraging me to continue to grow out my hair. That song was the highlight, and Coldplay not winning album of the year. So awesome I was mounted by a women... long story. Here is the youtube.

I looked out and picked out a map in the sky. No need for the nude of the moon as I am guided by firefly's.

It took me about three listens through to hear those first words. I love the lyrics of this song. Their video is spot on as well. Artistic and with just the right about of oddity.

First we have The Beastie Boys, one of my must see bands. Then we have TV on the Radio, one of the most exciting bands that I have discovered this year. The Mars Volta, these prog rockers, awesome, I need to see them live. We have others like Al Green, Snoop Dogg, Wilco, Nine Inch Nails, and The Decemberists. With more to come in the coming weeks, this is shaping up to be a great festival.

Not sure what was going on with last week, I only turned on my computer to create a playlist. New week, new music, new goodness.

This song channels some small night club in a large city, Mr. Bird has a great flow with his lyrics. He is coming to Utah at the end of February, I am needing some more concerts in my life, so this might be the one. I only have Armchair Apocrypha, a solid album with some great whistling. Seriously.

A simple song, I reckon. McHugh is the lead singer of the Australian band The Beautiful Girls a band you should check out.

But he is releasing his solo album, which he labeled as "Alternative / Acoustic / Reggae" listening through his stuff, he is enjoyable. Nothing really pops out for anything that he does. But that doesn't mean it isn't good.

Now this song just makes me want to dance through the halls of summer fun beach parties. But really, this song is great and so if the album Sea Lion.

As for this YouTube video it is pretty interesting as well. Here we have the band playing the song in an alley in Paris. That. Is. Awesome. The vocals are not the strongest point, but you just have to smile when you see the band jumping up and down and banging on the walls. The video comes from La Blogotheque, a French video blog that has bands like Beirut, The Shins, and Cold War Kids playing in the streets of Paris.

Have you ever had one of those days when you are just sad? Yeah life does deal its round-house-kicks-of-crap every now and again. But just one of those days that you feel like you shadow is extra heavy; that there is this sad feeling following you around? You get a couple of minutes of laughing in or you just get cheered up, then the feeling comes back. If you have never felt that, word.

Things are changing, stuff is coming to an end, maybe I am dealing with it all subconsciously before I deal with it consciously. What ever the case, I have been listening to slower, sadder songs mixed with the occasional lifter upper(cut).

"White Blank Page" by Mumford and Sons

Sorry I didn't post on Monday I will try and make it up this week!

I am really excited to hear this band in 09. An article on the BBC tells us about the band, and how three of them are guitar players.

Here is a band with four vocalists, three guitar players, two drummers, a pianist, an organist and a bass player, not to mention throwing the banjo, dobro and mandolin into the mix.
Images of a vast orchestral gathering begin to form, cemented momentarily by rich and varied performances on record. Four lads from London would not be the logical sum of so many parts.

So please enjoy this song, it is fuel for my soul.

I am dropping into a habit of doing later and later posts. I will try and make it stop. As I am typing this I have no clue what I was going to post. Give me a moment to gather some thoughts.

Ah, I got it.

The Last Shadow Puppets, a project featuring Alex Turner lead singer of the Arctic Monkeys and a Miles Kane from the Rascals. This song "My Mistakes Were Made For You" sounds like it is the beginning of a James Bond movie. It carries something sultry and when Turner sings I can almost see his words weaving back and forth, like some old screen saver.

I love the shot where they have Kane playing his guitar in front of that car with the red lights. I just love to think that some guy stopped his car so he could play his guitar.

My friend Natalie showed me these guys a while back. Since then they have been getting more and more exposure.

"Walking on a Dream" is a great song, their lead singers voice is a semi-slurred pusle.

And the pure fact that their lead singer could be a villain in an early 90's movie makes the video so much better.

As many of you know (or none of you), I love the Black Keys. You should all learn to love the Black Keys, because they are simply great. They are like those cookie sandwiches you make with graham-cracker and chocolate frosting, so tasty. Having them made with a my moms magic cooking spells and then letting them sit in the fridge so the graham gets soft (nom!) ...Enough about cookies.

But the lead singer and guitarist Dan Auerbach is releasing a solo album, here is his own words from Nonesuch Records.

"I was just recording songs like I’d always done and when they started to accumulate—I had hours of material—I just decided, what the hell. I started to think of it less as just songs that I’m doing every once in a while and began to think of it more as working as one complete record. When I finally decided I was going to do it, it came together pretty quickly."

“I played drums and percussion, sang harmonies, played glockenspiel—everything.” But he didn’t want the album to be a solitary effort or simply mirror The Black Keys’ approach to recording. “It’s more an ensemble kind of thing than the two-man stomp—a full band, playing in a room live, with organs, drums, bass, and guitars.”

[Mark Niell]...did it completely analog, no digital effects or anything. Any slap-back is a big old tape machine. Any reverb is a giant eight-foot long metal plate. We stayed pretty true to the idea of recording and mixing in an old school way.” (Nonesuch)

Here is why I am excited for this album. The first album that I heard from the Black Keys was Attack and Release it was produced by Danger Mouse (Gnarls Barkley). The pairing with Danger Mouse came when they were going to collaborate with Ike Turner, but after he passed, they stayed together to produce the album. With that as a history; if you listen to any other album, Attack and Release does feel like it does have a 'being produced' sound to it, not saying that is something bad. I love to see bands diverging from their normal expectant sound to touch other genres of music that influence them or, in this case work with an amazing producer to draw out fantastic new material and Attack and Release is a perfect example of this.

After falling in love with the album I went and got The Rubber Factory and The Big Come Up two of their early albums which weigh in with garage, low-fi, minimalistic blues-rock. It was fantastic music, just great stuff. As I listened to more and more of their music Attack and Release became less and less of a rotation when I wanted to listen to the Black Keys. To hear that this solo album is sounding more like earlier Black Keys has me excited.

I heard about it from Stereogum they give a feel for where he is heading with the album. I just hope he stops in Utah when he tours.

I love that picture and I love this band.

"Lost Coastlines" is one of the best first songs on an album. Not sure if that last sentance makes sense, but it does to me. The song puts forth the album, to me it conveys this journey your about to start. I do not want to delve to deep, but let me close with their lyric from the song.

Aha, another artist from the UK. I am sure that I will come down from this kick in a couple of weeks. But Limbo, Panto is a great album and the bands freshman album. The drumming is great, their singer Finn Andrews (a great name for a front man) really stretches his voice and gives a great range, for example: "The Devil's Crayon" Andrews keeps a lower range, going up every now and again, then in the song "Vigil for a Fuddy Duddy" he keeps a pretty constant falsetto. But I can see his voice driving some away.

"Golden Age" by TV on the Radio

HAZZAH!!! It is 10:34 AM, and I am not ready for bed, but I know I need the sleep. So the post for today is from the album Dear Science by TV on the Radio (Spin and Rolling Stones both rated it #1 for best album of 2008). This is my album of 2008. David Sitek is their sound tech/guitarist. The man is a genius when is comes to drums and sound. His ability to create unique beats, with great rhythm had me loving this album instantly.

Golden Age is a probably one of the best tracks on the album; its bass line mixed with the high hat give it a instant catch; by the time the clapping starts you are hooked.

Folk Wednesday. "The Lowering", by the Avett Brothers

The Avett Brothers is a band that I have been listening to for the past five or six months. I have been trying to get all of their LP's and EP's, tough to find. I could say a lot about the band, they have some powerful songs, so much that more then one of them have brought me to tears. They are not afraid to shout their feelings live or in studio; with a standing bass, banjo, and some solid bluegrass guitar give the band a great Americana feel to it.

"The Lowering (A Sad Day in Greenvilletown)" is from the album Four Thieves Gone: The Robbinsville Sessions the whole album has this feeling of a jam session that they happened to record, I do skip a couple of tracks compared to their solid Emotionalism , but "The Lowering" has this impact; introspective, meaningful, and full of honesty (much like a lot of their music) makes it the best track on the record.

"Connjur" by School of Seven Bells

zimMarshall is my attempt at a daily blog post of new music (mostly for my friends). Some of it will be new stuff that I have found as well as bands that I have loved for a while.

Here is "Connjur" from the band School of Seven Bells from the album Alpinisms

Stereogum just released thier new music video service called Decomposed, and they have three great songs from School of Seven Bells.

Their other two tracks "Caldo" and "iamundernodisguise" are worth a listen as well. I have really enjoyed this band, the track "iamundernodisguise" really highlights how hypnotic and ambient the twins voices can be.
